Heat Sink Design Inputs for Performance and Manufacturability

Heat sink performance and manufacturability depend on geometry, alloy, fin spacing, base thickness, airflow and operating conditions. Conglin’s engineering team reviews your available design parameters to recommend practical extrusion and machining options that balance thermal performance, structural requirements and production efficiency.

Common Aluminum Choices for Heat Sink Projects

Alloy / temperBest-fit useTypical Thermal Conductivity ReferenceRFQ notes
6063-T5 / T6Extruded heat sink profiles, dense fins, anodized partsAbout 200 W/m·K classGood balance of extrudability, surface quality and thermal performance
6061-T6CNC machined heat sinks, stronger mounting areas, structural partsAbout 160–170 W/m·K classUseful when screw holes, milling, flatness or mechanical strength are important
1050 / 1060Simple high-conductivity plates or less complex thermal partsAbout 220 W/m·K+ classHigher conductivity, but shape complexity and strength need separate review
6060 / 6082Project-specific profiles, machining or higher-load applicationsConfirm by final alloy and temperChosen after drawing, load, finish and production route are checked

Thermal conductivity values are material references only. Final heat sink thermal resistance depends on geometry, airflow, heat load, mounting conditions and surface treatment.

Heat Sink Dimensions and Performance Details to Share

  • Overall size: width × height × cut length, plus quantity and destination port
  • Fin design: fin height, fin thickness, spacing, tongue ratio and airflow direction
  • Base requirement: base thickness, contact surface flatness, thermal pad or interface area
  • Machining: CNC holes, slots, threaded holes, countersinks, deburring and cleaning
  • Surface finish: natural, clear anodized, black anodized, powder coating or special color
  • Performance target: power load, working temperature, cooling method and assembly space
Extrusion feasibilityThin fins, unequal wall thickness and high aspect-ratio designs are reviewed against die strength, alloy choice and production stability.
Surface performanceAnodizing can improve corrosion resistance and surface emissivity, especially for black heat sink profiles and outdoor assemblies.
Inspection proofMaterial grade, dimension, surface finish, flatness and packing proof can be prepared for your supplier approval workflow.
